The Nation's BIA social services program is comprised of multiple components. General Assistance provides eligible applicants with basic living necessities, refers applicants to additional sources of assistance and provides emergency assistance in the event of natural disasters. This same program also provides indigent burial assistance to on-reservation Penobscot. Others components of the BIA Social Services Program assist in the payment of substitute care services for children in tribal custody and provide legal guardianship services to those Penobscot who do not have an appropriate family member to act in that capacity.
