Hunting Permits/Information

Non-tribal Members

Many hunting opportunities are available for non-tribal members on Penobscot trust lands.  Below is a list of the species available for hunting and the associated permit applications.  Please consult the Chapter VII Fish and Game Regulations for a complete list of rules and regulations for each hunt.

  • Deer - $30

    • Deer hunting access permits will be issued by the Department of Natural Resources by the following order of priority:
      1. Non-tribal member Indian spouses,
      2. Non-tribal member spouses,
      3. Persons utilizing the services of a Registered Penobscot Guide,
      4. Non-members hunting with tribal member campowners,
      5. Non-members hunting with a tribal member.
    • When the number of applications in a priority category exceeds the number of remaining permits available, issuance shall then be determined by random drawing.  Only permits bearing an August 1-31 postmark will be accepted.

  • FALL bear - $50

    • Persons interested in obtaining a fall bear permit must use a Registered Penobscot Guide (see Penobscot Guides section below) or be accompanied by a tribal member or campowner.  
    • Fall bear hunting takes place during the general deer season. 
    • No baiting, trapping, or running with dogs is allowed.

  • SPRING bear - $500
    • Persons interested in obtaining a spring bear hunting permit must get one through an Approved Penobscot Bear Guide (see Penobscot Guides section below).
    • Spring hunting for bear is done over bait.
    • No trapping or running with dogs is allowed.

  • Small game/Ruffed grouse/Snowshoe hare - $30

    • Persons interested in obtaining a permit for quail, pheasant, grouse, snowshoe hare, gray squirrel and/or woodcock must use a Registered Penobscot Guide (see Penobscot Guides section below) or be accompanied by a tribal member or campowner.

  • Waterfowl - $40

    • The access fee for waterfowl permits shall be waived for persons accompanied by a Penobscot tribal member.
    • Waterfowl shall include brant, wild ducks, geese and swans.
    • State of Maine hunting regulations apply; Federal & State stamps REQUIRED.

  • Nuisance
    • The Director of the Department of Natural Resources may authorize the taking of nuisance animals outside of the established general seasons.  Please contact John Banks (207-817-7330) to request a nuisance permit.

Penobscot Tribal Members

  • Sustenance
    • Sustenance hunting is allowed for tribal members on Sunday.
    • *NEW* The Department of Natural Resources is working on lifetime hunting licenses for Penobscot tribal members.  We hope to have these in place for most hunters by January 2016. 
    • Click here to fill out the form and submit your information for a lifetime hunting license.  Please contact Cookie (207-817-7331) with any questions about this process.

  • Nuisance

  • Trapping
    • Any tribal member wanting to sustenance trap must register with the Department of Natural Resources EVERY year.
