Foster Care

We are committed to helping Penobscot families stay together whenever possible. Our goal is to keep children with their families, support reunification, and create kinship or tribal permanency plans when needed. We also work to make sure children in our care have access to services that respect their culture and help them grow up safe and healthy.

We want to thank you for thinking about joining the Circle of Protection to help keep our children safe by becoming a foster parent.

At Penobscot Nation Social Services, we work to support families and help children stay in their homes whenever possible. If a child cannot stay at home, we look to their family and our community to care for them until they can safely return.

There are many ways you can help children and their families when foster care is needed.

We are looking for foster homes, therapeutic foster homes, emergency placements, and respite providers.

If you are interested in becoming licensed to care for a child in your family or in the community, we invite you to join our circle. Please contact Brandon Miller, our Tribal Family Advocate and Violence Prevention Coordinator, at (207) 852-4417 or [email protected]. He will guide you through the application process, help with the background check and health history form, and arrange a home study and shelter safety inspection to see if any changes are needed to make your home safe for children.

Title IV-E of the Social Security Act provides funds for states and tribes to provide foster care, transitional independent living programs for children, guardianship assistance, and adoption assistance for children with special needs.
