PASSAGE OF DRUG FREE SAFE ZONES

On November 12, 2024, the Tribal Council passed the resolution, that designated several areas of the reservation, as “Drug Free Safe Zones”. This resolution that was submitted by the Penobscot Nation Police Department, was requested, for the purpose of establishing a safe environment for our community members most notably our youth, who visit and participate in activities at the Nation’s schools, playgrounds, parks, athletic fields, and cultural sites. By designating these areas and placing signage at these locations, it will alert offenders engaged in illegal drug activities, that they are subjected to enhanced penalties for drug violations committed at or within 1000 feet of these zones.  The Police Department is committed to making our community as safe as possible, and this is one of the steps we are taking to accomplish that goal.

The new “ Drug Free Safe Zones, are: The park across from 6 Down Street, the green space (formerly the Kateri School lot) at the corner of Down Street and Bridge Street, the J.J. Love Playground On Bear Ridge Road, Joe Pease on the Cemetery Road, the Penobscot Nation Youth Program, the Indian Island School and athletic fields, the boat landing and adjacent lot on Wabanaki Way,  the cultural site at the end of Susep Lane and the Fire Road along the river.
