Message From The Chief

Dear Tribal citizens,

I want to express sincere condolences to all those impacted by the senseless violence that occurred last evening in Lewiston. Our thoughts are with the victims, witnesses, their loved ones, the first responders and all who are working for a peaceful end to this horrific situation.

Unfortunately, these types of tragedies have become far too common across the country and yet, it is still hard to fathom that is has occurred in Maine, our homeland. The traumatic impacts are far-reaching. Maine is a small state, and many tribal members have family, friends and colleagues who are directly and indirectly impacted. Please take time today to check in with those who are important to you, we all may need extra support as this tragedy continues to unfold.

All levels of law enforcement officers from across the state are working to bring the shooter to justice. I have advised members of our own department to offer whatever assistance they can provide. Rest assured we are vigilantly patrolling all our lands and are ready to pass on any relevant information to the appropriate officials.

We have postponed several events scheduled for today. We felt that it was important for people to be able to stay safely at home and be available for each other.

I have instructed the Health Department to have counselors available today if people need someone to listen to them (207-817-7469). I will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated. Once again please keep the people of Lewiston and our state in your thoughts and prayers.

Please take care and be safe,
Kirk Francis, Chief
