Sustenance

Sustenance hunting is allowed for tribal members on Sunday.

*NEW* The Department of Natural Resources is working on lifetime hunting licenses for Penobscot tribal members.  We hope to have these in place for most hunters by January 2016.

Nuisance

The Director of the Department of Natural Resources may authorize the taking of nuisance animals outside of the established general seasons.

Trapping

Any tribal member wanting to sustenance trap must register with the Department of Natural Resources EVERY year.

Permit applications will be approved once each month at the Fish and Game Committee meeting.

DNR Administration may issue permits to members of the Penobscot Indian Nation to take one male deer during the months of July and August.

Other Permits

Fiddlehead – $50

Applicants must visit the Department of Natural Resources to purchase a fiddlehead permit

Free-use/Firewood permits

Tribal members and non-tribal members (for a fee) can get firewood permits for up to 10 cords of firewood per year,

Tribal members can get a free use permit for other forest products such as sugar maple tapping, tipping, Christmas trees, cedar posts, etc,

Tribal members do not need a permit to harvest forest products for traditional use such as basket or canoe making.

Marine Resources

Permits for commercial and/or sustenance harvesting of marine resources are available in accordance with Maine Marine Resource Laws and Regulations.  Please contact (207-817-7331) for more information.

Traditional Salmon Sustenance Permits

Permits for tribal members for the taking of Atlantic Salmon by netting or tradional spear may be issued by the DNR Director in accordance with Chapter VII, Section 303.

Eel Trapping Access Permits – $100

In accordance with Chapter VII Section 402, permits for trapping eels within Penobscot Nation waters are available for a $100.00 fee.

Land-Use and Work-Related Permits

Permits for land use and work related activities are available through the Department of Trust Responsibilities (DTR).

Non-tribal Members

Many hunting opportunities are available for non-tribal members on Penobscot trust lands.  Below is a list of the species available for hunting and the associated permit applications.

Deer – $50 (this has been increased)

Deer hunting access permits will be issued by the Department of Natural Resources by the following order of priority:

Non-tribal member Indian spouses,

Non-tribal member spouses,

Persons utilizing the services of a Registered Penobscot Guide,

Non-members hunting with tribal member campowners,

Non-members hunting with a tribal member.

When the number of applications in a priority category exceeds the number of remaining permits available, issuance shall then be determined by random drawing.  Only permits bearing an August 1-31 postmark will be accepted.

FALL bear – $50

Persons interested in obtaining a fall bear permit must use a Registered Penobscot Guide (see Penobscot Guides section below) or be accompanied by a tribal member or camp owner.

Fall bear hunting takes place during the general deer season.

No baiting, trapping, or running with dogs is allowed.

SPRING bear – $500

Small game/Ruffed grouse/Snowshoe hare – $50

Persons interested in obtaining a permit for quail, pheasant, grouse, snowshoe hare, gray squirrel and/or woodcock must use a Registered Penobscot Guide (see Penobscot Guides section below) or be accompanied by a tribal member or camp owner.

Waterfowl – $50

The access fee for waterfowl permits shall be waived for persons accompanied by a Penobscot tribal member.

Waterfowl shall include brant, wild ducks, geese and swans.

State of Maine hunting regulations apply; Federal & State stamps REQUIRED.
