Message from the Chief
Letter to the Community
Dear tribal citizens,
I am sad to let you know that we have lost another tribal elder, Beth Sockbeson has passed away. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and to our community.
Beth was a proud and respected Penobscot citizen and leader, serving the Nation for decades as the Home Improvement Coordinator, on tribal council multiple times, and on both the health and the housing committees. I have always appreciated her input and admired how much she cared for and supported Penobscot people. I remember how she would greet others with a smile and ask how their family was doing.
Beth treasured her large family and the many friends she made over the years; she loved to get everyone together. She was mother to eight, including our Vice-Chief Mark Sockbeson. She also leaves 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
It is important that we continue to support each other as we mourn another loss and remember what our ancestors taught us about being kind, generous, and grateful.
Lastly, I want to thank our staff and community response teams who have provided continual support to our families and community during these times of loss.
Best to you all and your families.
Kirk E. Francis, Chief
