It’s that time of year when LIHEAP Program starts taking applications. To ensure that everyone can view a copy of LIHEAP plan, it has been posted at www.penobscotnation.org and is available as a hard copy at Social Services. LOW-INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP)

2026-2027

In addition to Indian Island, the service area includes certain Penobscot households in the following municipalities: Alton, Argyle, Bradley, Costigan, Milford, Old Town, and Orono. Please contact the Department of Social Services at (207) 817-7491, for more information. Due to problems that we have encountered, we will NOT be able to “front” any deliveries for you, nor will we be able to make promissory calls to your vendor on your behalf. While filling out your LIHEAP application, please be prepared to tell your intake worker how you will want your benefits split.

Benefits will not change after you have been certified.

Application Schedule

The following is the application schedule for this program year. Unless otherwise indicated, applications will be taken at the Social Services Building.

Applications will be taken at both the Social Services Building and Senior Meals Site (Only at Senior Meals Site on Oct. 5th and 6th)

For FY 2027:

a. Applications shall be taken from elderly households as follows:

Monday, October 5, 2026: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Senior Meal Site

Tuesday, October 6, 2026: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Senior Meal Site

Wednesday, October 7, 2026: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Thursday, October 8, 2026: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

· Applications shall be taken from households with special needs members and households with children aged two (2) or younger as follows:

Tuesday, October 13, 2026: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Wednesday, October 14, 2026: 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 15, 2026: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

· Applications shall be taken from all segments of the service population as follows:

Monday, October 19, 2026: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuesday, October 20, 2026: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 21, 2026: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 22, 2026: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Monday, October 26, 2026: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuesday, October 27, 2026: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 28, 2026: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 29, 2026: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Thereafter, applications will be taken by appointment only until Thursday, March 18, 2027. Under no circumstances will any appointments be available after Thursday, March 18, 2027.

You will need: 1. Income Verification 2. Most current light bill 3. Social Security numbers for all household members 4. Date of Birth 5. Employment – back one full year from date of application, addresses, phone numbers, dates & pay stubs.
